But biodegradation is far from a simple process. It depends on many factors \u2013 especially the environment in which the material ends up at the end of its life cycle.<\/p><p data-start=\"1003\" data-end=\"1397\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/publications\/product\/biosinn-products-for-which-biodegradation-makes-sense-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"1007\" data-end=\"1025\">BioSinn paper <\/strong><\/a>by the <a href=\"https:\/\/nova-institute.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nova-Institute<\/a> makes this very clear: not all materials degrade in the same way. Temperature, humidity, oxygen levels, microorganisms, and even the pH of the surrounding environment determine how fast (or slow) biodegradation occurs. Whether a material disappears within weeks or lingers for years depends heavily on whether it ends up in <strong data-start=\"1328\" data-end=\"1339\">compost,<\/strong>in <strong data-start=\"1344\" data-end=\"1353\">soil,<\/strong>in <strong data-start=\"1358\" data-end=\"1371\">freshwater<\/strong> or in the <strong data-start=\"1380\" data-end=\"1388\">ocean<\/strong> .<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-adf5808 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"adf5808\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Industrial Compost \u2013 Controlled Conditions, Fast Degradation<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-730cf28 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-tablet__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"730cf28\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Industrial composting facilities provide ideal conditions: around 60 \u00b0C, high moisture, plenty of oxygen, and a thriving population of microorganisms. Under these controlled circumstances, biodegradable plastics such as PLA, PBAT, or PBS can fully decompose within a few weeks.<br data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1795\" \/>However, these conditions are rarely found in nature. Temperatures and moisture levels fluctuate with the seasons, and microbial activity is lower. A material that breaks down perfectly in industrial compost may persist for years in soil or water.<br data-start=\"4823\" data-end=\"4826\" \/>That\u2019s why it\u2019s essential to match the material\u2019s biodegradation profile to its real-world disposal environment.
