Today is finally the day: the Stoppelmarkt in the district of Vechta is opening its doors again! Over several days, the festival grounds are transformed into a colourful sea of rides, marquees, music and culinary highlights – and have been for centuries.
The Stoppelmarkt has an impressive history. It was originally held in the centre of Vechta in 1298 as a traditional annual fair. After it moved to its current location in 1577 – a harvested field, or 'stubble field' – the name 'Stoppelmarkt' stuck. Today, it is considered one of the largest folk festivals in northern Germany, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
