Rethinking sustainable products at the HAWK Hildesheim

Students shape sustainability

The move towards more sustainable materials that are also technically sophisticated is well and truly underway, and it's also getting universities thinking. That's why we want to connect the future with our materials.

Project Seminar: Designing Smart Daily Helpers Utilising the Capability of an Innovative Home-Compostable Bio-Plastic

Das Projektseminar „Designing Smart Daily Helpers Utilizing the Capability of an Innovative Home-Compostable Bio-Plastic“ der HAWK Hildesheim was designed to get students excited about product design and to help them come up with clever solutions for everyday problems. We had three topics to choose from: Home & Garden, Toys & Sports, and Ocean & Logistics.

In a joint effort with Global Innovations, we held a contest among students to come up with the best idea using compostable materials. At the end of the project, we presented the ideas to Global Innovations and ourselves, and we evaluated them. Valeriya Mykhaylychenko won first place with €500 in prize money. Second place went to Felix Rother, and third place to Mira Jasmin Feltgen.

As well as the three winning ideas, there were lots of other great ideas that we're now testing out. We're really happy to have been able to take part in this project seminar with our materials and that the students got to gain some great experience in product design.

Why you should use compostable products in the living room too

"You can’t put that on the table – it’s compostable!"
We hear statements like this all the time when it comes to biodegradable products such as plant pots. But this common misunderstanding makes many people doubt bioplastics, which is completely unfair. In this article, we explain what biodegradable materials really do, why they do not "disintegrate on their own" and why they are even ideal for indoor use.

(Bio)plastics and water - an ambivalent relationship

On World Environment Day, it is worth thinking about the connection between plastics and water. Not many other materials have such a big effect on our waters – sometimes this effect is bad, but thanks to new bio-based alternatives, it is also becoming more positive.
