Upcycling sunflower seed hulls

Sunflower Seed Husks: A Valuable Resource from Nature

In the food industry, large quantities of waste are produced every year. In addition to fruit and vegetable peels, sunflower seed hulls are also among these wastes. What many people don't know: These hulls are a valuable raw material that is ideally suited for the production of bio-based materials.

Sustainable Alternative to Conventional Plastics

Around 2,000 tons of sunflower seed hulls are produced annually in Europe - a huge potential for raw materials. We have recognized this potential and secured a worldwide patent for the combination of sunflower seed husks with plastics. The result is a material that combines the advantages of plastic and sunflower seed hulls.

Valuable Waste Product with Positive Land Use Effects

Sunflower seed hulls have a positive land use effect because nobody would grow sunflowers just for the hulls. They are mainly used to make sunflower oil and as a fodder crop. The shells are a by-product and can therefore be used in other ways.

Versatile and Unique

Sunflower seed hulls convince not only with their sustainability but also with their unique properties. They give the products an attractive dark brown marbling that remains even when dyed.

In addition, the husk offers process-optimizing properties in injection molding. The natural swelling behavior of the natural fiber benefits thick-walled products, while the residual oil content in the husk ensures problem-free processing.

Less Plastic, More Nature: A Contribution to Environmental Protection

Using sunflower seed hulls in plastics production helps save fossil resources, whether it's bioplastics or conventional plastics. So, using this waste product in new ways helps the environment by saving fossil fuels and reducing CO2 emissions.

Sunflower seed hulls are a great raw material that nature provides us with. By using this material in new ways, we can save fossil resources, reduce CO2 emissions and make sustainable products. We're therefore at the cutting edge of this field and show what the future of the plastics industry can look like: sustainable, innovative and resource-saving.
